Brave beginnings (the ‘ingredients’)

From teddy bears, ropes and balls – it wouldn’t surprise me if ‘play’ was the first word that came out of my mouth, because since a child that’s all I knew. But it was this very playful nature that made me a natural target for bullies at school – they poked and prodded, and I had big reactions. I was chased down corridors, called terrible names and at its worst, was physically assaulted.

As I thought the coronavirus pandemic lockdown came to save the day at the perfect time; in reality, it only further isolated me from human connection. However, it was this very boredom that led me to discover of the dusty, dilapidated Singapore Airlines deck of cards that would sit in the corner of my desk.

The Messy Middle (the ‘cooking’)

Falling in love with the mental escape the cards gave me, I was hooked by the two-minute YouTube card trick tutorial, and subsequently, my parents’ flabbergasted reactions after performing it to them. It became a ritual: I would learn a new card trick a day, then run over to my parents’ bedroom and perform for them each night during lockdown.

Soon after the lockdown lifted, I was craving to perform for my few friends and cousins and found the same enjoyment doing it for them. After pausing from performing during the HSC, I then started again in university, this time on a bigger scale as word spread around – getting booked at birthday parties and even a local Toyota branch’s Christmas party.

After having spoken at TEDxSydney and interviewing Michael Phelps as a journalist – I have now carefully developed my unique showmanship, to create an immersive experience marked by interactivity, awe and entertainment for your audience, who will talk about the magic for weeks onward.

Coming from an Indian background, I find it easy to relate to multicultural groups, understand subtle differences in humour, and create long-lasting memories shared by everyone.
